Investor Desk Associate
About the job:
CDC is the UK’s development finance institution. Established in 1948 we invest in the most challenging markets of Africa and Asia with the aim of supporting economic development.
CDC has net assets of £6.4bn and a portfolio of £4.7 billion. In 2019 we committed over £1.66 billion of capital to business in Africa and Asia and are now invested in 1,200 businesses which directly employ over 875,000 workers and support many more.
CDC is a Public Limited Company and is wholly owned on behalf of the UK government by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
In the last few years, we have expanded our presence in Africa and Asia by opening new offices in Bangladesh, Egypt, Kenya, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan with additional locations opening soon.
At CDC, we take an entrepreneurial approach to investment. We think innovatively about ways to deploy our capital, attract and mobilise other investors, and drive transformational impact.
Primarily, CDC invests through direct equity, direct debt and funds products to achieve impact and a financial return which is reinvested into more businesses. We aim to create jobs and accelerate economic prosperity and focus on sectors that will do this; manufacturing, food and agriculture, infrastructure, financial institutions, construction, health and education.
CDC works with like-minded ambitious people who are primarily motivated by our mission to deliver impact. We are a growing team of over 485 and place immense value on diversity within our organisation.

Team and role overview
The challenges we address are deep and multifaceted. Therefore, in addition to our own investments, we increasingly focus on ‘mobilising’ commercial investors into our markets to address challenges at scale. Mobilisation is a core focus of our new strategy.
Mobilisation or ‘crowding-in’ of private sector capital is the only way to generate enough scale of capital to address the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). CDC’s new Investor Desk has therefore been established to provide investor insights to the investment teams and help mobilise a wide range of commercial investors, with a particular focus on international and local institutional investors (pensions, insurance, sovereign wealth funds, family offices, endowments, etc). We want to see more investors deploy capital alongside CDC into impactful investments and our markets more broadly.
This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a brand-new team and help build it up from scratch. While the primary role of the Investor Desk Associate is to facilitate data gathering, data management and analysis, the role will provide full exposure to the Investor Desk function and opportunities to support the establishment of investor relations, investor arrangements, communications materials, and the team strategy.
The Investor Desk is a small team of three people: Head of Investor Desk, Investor Desk Manager and Investor Desk Associate (this role). It sits within CDC’s Financial Services Group (FSG) unit, which oversees CDC’s investment activity via financial institutions and into financial services. However, whilst the Desk forms part of the FSG unit, the Investor Desk’s services are also offered to CDC’s other two investment units - Infrastructure & Climate and SMART (Services, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Real Estate and Technology) teams and therefore the Desk serves all of CDC’s pipeline and portfolio.
The Associate’s primary responsibilities will be to design and develop CDC’s investor database, deliver insightful analysis to CDC’s investment teams, and create presentation decks and marketing materials to inform and mobilise private investors. However, given the ‘start-up’ nature of this role, activities will include a broad spectrum of data/information-driven support to the Desk.
Creating the analytical foundation for CDC’s decision making on the highest value co-investment partners (across international institutional investors as well as those local to our markets in Africa and South Asia)
Mapping and documenting historic and current co-investor and co-investment information. Given this is a new function within CDC, information will need to be gathered from a range of internal and external sources, including through surveys and interviews, to ensure existing data is gathered in one place for further use.
Creating and maintaining Investor Desk CRM and other key resources needed to provide regular and on demand reports and status assessments of investor relations and investor insights internally.
Providing analysis of our investor data to help define Investor Desk priorities.
Produce market intelligence suitable for different external investor audiences to increase mobilisation potential from the private sector.
Assisting the Investor Relations and Investor Arrangements functions by: tracking investor relations calls, taking meeting minutes and follow-up actions; ensuring the CRM is up to date; liaising with CDC deal teams and other internal colleagues to facilitate data sharing; tracking investor mobilisation progress on deals across CDC deal teams.
Responding to ad hoc requests as needed.
Strong skills in analytics, ideally with professional experience in an investment firm, consulting or equivalent (including strong data visualisation skills).
Professional experience gathering, validating, and applying information in the investment process, development finance and/or in strategic planning.
Experience working independently and unaided, with evidence of ability to deliver quality products on time and to required quality.
Demonstrable interest in development finance in emerging markets (professional experience in relevant markets would be desirable).
Master’s in Finance, Development Finance or Economics helpful but not essential.
Results Focus: Drive to achieve objectives/results
Personal Effectiveness: Organising self/teams to meet agreed deadlines
Attention to Detail: With ability to retrieve, review and quality assure large amounts of data and content
Learning Mindset and Adaptability: Energised by the prospect of setting up a new team, with a ‘no task is too small’ approach
Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively carry out role
Team Working: Collaboration with own team and the larger employee community
Excellent analytical skills and a proven ability to research and collate data
Excellent proficiency of Excel and experience with CRM systems are highly advantageous.
Ability to draw conclusions and present ideas
Understanding of private capital markets and different types of investors
Knowledge of the investment process is preferred but not essential
We look for colleagues who are:
Impact-led and commercially rigorous
Tenacious in the face of challenges
Collaborative and caring
