A week of fantastic Engineering work experience at Atkins!
Here, Rumaitha Patel, a Year 12 student and a member of the SEO Advance programme, shares news of her fantastic week of work experience at the global Engineering and Consulting firm, Atkins!
My name is Rumaitha and I study at Seven Kings School in Redbridge. I recently received 9 GCSE qualifications and now I am currently studying 4 A-levels in Maths, Economics, Religious Studies and Psychology.
I wanted to take part in the Atkins placement through the SEO Advance programme as I knew it would be an excellent opportunity to further my learning about the Engineering sector. I felt that Engineering can be a challenging career for those who are creative and love to be constantly problem solving and finding solutions, and I was looking forward to gaining a real, hands-on experience of what happens day-to-day at a large and leading company.
During my 1-week placement at Atkins Global, I worked with two civil engineers on a daily basis. They set me a fascinating project where I had to develop an area in Shoreditch to meet a specific specification brief; I had to design a 5-storey building which was intended for commercial use, and I had to begin with sketches to generate a range of ideas which were both aesthetically pleasing and innovative. I picked three of these to be my concept designs which I then presented with specification points such as sustainability of materials, measurements, context, processes and structural form and chose the best one.
After the design was chosen, I was shown how to use a software called Revit which supported me in providing a 3D model of my overall building, including the furniture and internal structure. On the last day of the placement I presented this back to a group of engineers in which they gave me feedback and congratulated me for my progress within the week.
During my time with Atkins, I learnt that the Engineering sector covers many wide-ranging sub-fields such as architecture, finance and civil engineering, and engineering in general requires a broad range of transferable skills.
I also feel that I developed as a person during the week I spent at the firm; I learnt to communicate better with others and was able to show how independent I can be. Working with the staff at Atkins taught me that problems always have a solution and I have taken so much away from this amazing opportunity!
